چکیده

Abstract. Enhancements of stationary planetary waves (SPWs) and traveling (TPWs) are commonly observed in the middle atmosphere during sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events. Based on least squares fitting method (Wu et al., 1995), numerous studies have used satellite measurements to investigate characteristics TPWs SSWs, but they ignored effect SPWs. However, a rapid large change SPWs SSWs may lead significant disturbances amplitude derived TPWs. In this study, we present new methodology for obtaining amplitudes wave numbers quasi-5-day oscillations (Q5DOs) major SSWs. Stratosphere - Troposphere Interaction during Stratospheric Sudden Warming Events

The stratosphere and the troposphere exhibit a strong coupling during the winter months. However, the coupling mechanisms between the respective vertical layers are not fully understood. An idealized spectral core dynamical model is utilized in the present study in order to clarify the coupling timing, location and mechanisms. Since the coupling between the winter stratosphere and troposphere i...

Supervised Learning Approaches to Classify Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events

Sudden stratospheric warmings are prominent examples of dynamical wave–mean flow interactions in the Arctic stratosphere during Northern Hemisphere winter. They are characterized by a strong temperature increase on time scales of a few days and a strongly disturbed stratospheric vortex. This work investigates a wide class of supervised learning methods with respect to their ability to classify ...

Observations of planetary waves in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere during stratospheric warming events

This study investigates the effect of stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) on planetary wave (PW) activity in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT). PW activity near 95 km is derived from meteor wind data using a chain of eight SuperDARN radars at high northern latitudes that span longitudes from 150W to 25 E and latitudes from 51 to 66 N. Zonal wave number 1 and 2 components were extracted f...

Influence of Stratospheric Sudden Warming on AIRS Midtropospheric CO2

Midtropospheric CO2 retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) were used to explore the influence of stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) on CO2 in the middle to upper troposphere. To choose the SSW events that had strong coupling between the stratosphere and troposphere, the authors applied a principal component analysis to the NCEP/Department of Energy Global Reanalysis 2 (NCEP-2) ...

Satellite observations of the quasi 5-day wave in noctilucent clouds and mesopause temperatures

[1] We report on simultaneous measurements of the westward propagating quasi 5-day wave in the occurrence rate of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and the temperature field at NLC altitude during the 2005 NLC season in the northern hemisphere. NLCs are detected using SCIAMACHY/ Envisat limb scattering measurements, and the temperature profiles are measured with MLS/Aura. Quasi 5-day wave signatures ar...
